When I started taking notes on my iPad, the game changed. As a naturally creative person, my notes were already elaborate. I spent so much money on colored pens, markers, sticky notes, and notebooks each semester! I enjoy hand-writing my notes over typing them on the computer, but hand writing them on a computer was a whole other experience. Below I will discuss how to use my personal favorite note-taking app and suggest other popular outlets!
Notability
I want to start off by explaining how investing in a tablet is worth it if you are in or starting college and considering pursuing higher education (grad or medical school). I am not a huge numbers person for this estimation so bear with me, but I would spend nearly $50 on note taking supplies and prints in the library (because I would always run out from printing lecture slides) each semester (elaborate notes remember). Say you’re an undergrad and are planning on going to medical school (8+ years of school right there). This is a rough estimate, but for me that would be $800 over the course of my education I would spend on supplies that are not reusable, you might lose, and now have to find a place to store all that paper! My refurbished iPad (which I found on Groupon for a fraction of the price and works great, and 2017 models now are only $250) + new apple pencil (which is not necessary, you can get a stylus for $10 on Amazon) + Notability app ($9.99, but there are free versions I will share below) totals to a one time investment around $500. This was a no brainer for me. I love my technology, and now I never had to buy a notebook, pens, or print slides ever again!
Now, if you’re like me, you NEVER spend any money purchasing apps, and I was so apprehensive at first but I will show you just how amazing it is!
Other uses for Notability incorporated into my daily life:
- Planner: Download a free planner template and say goodbye to purchasing a new one each year!
- Reading: Whether it is textbooks, journal articles, or free ePub downloads, I read books in my Notability app.
- Digital Document Signing: I no longer need a printer or scanner when you can take a picture or download documents that I can digitally sign and simply email them back!
- Journaling: “Dear diary…” can also be found on my Notability app LOL, but a great place to keep lists and write down goals.
- Coloring Book: Especially over quarantine, I downloaded so many free images to color on the Notability app and it keeps me entertained for hours, also I am no longer buying markers and adult coloring books.
- SO much more: This is only scratching the surface of what this app can do!
Other note-taking apps!
- GoodNotes: Another great app! Its a little cheaper than Notability and does a lot of the same features, I personally have not used it but have seen many comparisons and heard great things!
- Microsoft OneNote: Free and good for windows users!
- Notes: Free and comes with your iPhone or iPad! Does not have as many features but still an easy and user friendly platform!
